kVp METER

Typical Number in Hospital: 1 Cost Bands: 3,4 References:

The energy distribution of the output of a diagnostic X-ray set is determined by the type of tube in use and also by the kilovoltage applied to that tube.

The peak kilovoltage (kVp) can be measured by direct electrical connection to an X-ray tube circuit using a voltage divider circuit, or alternatively it can be determined indirectly from the X-ray beam. Devices for indirect determination of kVp usually employ the known attenuation of different X-ray energies through copper sheeting. The different X-ray intensities perceived on the upper and lower side of a copper sheet can be detected and delivered to a computing circuit to calculate the originating kilovoltage.

Such devices may be used by the X-ray service engineer, or in the X-ray department as part of a quality assurance programme for verifying the consistent performance of the X-ray set.
