This is a carbon dioxide absorber containing soda-lime used in rebreathing anaesthetic circuits. It connects between the breathing bag and the facepiece or endotracheal tube. One advantage of this in-line type of absorber is that it can be sterilized relatively easily after use on infected patients. Defects of such 'to and fro' absorbers are water logging due to condensation, channelling of the gases (thus defeating the absorber) due to shake down of the granules, and imperfect containment of the soda-lime leading to inhalation of some of the dust.
