Recent improvements in signal processing techniques have enabled the development of non-invasive blood pressure metering of adequate reliability for anaesthetized and tranquil patients. Blood pressure metering is achieved by a normal cuff method, usually sensing the arterial pulsations via the cuff inflating tube.
It has become common to include a non-invasive blood pressure monitor which can display mean blood pressure, average systolic and average diastolic pressure, pulse rate, patient temperature and sometimes breathing rate in a single instrument, and this is called a vital signs monitor by some manufacturers.
