To detect failure of a lung ventilator or accidental disconnection in the patient circuit, it is wise to employ an alarm device to show if the pressure in the breathing circuit goes outside preset limits, or if the machine fails to provide the correct ventilation cycle. This type of device is useful during anaesthesia, and in intensive care, where the ventilator must operate for long periods without close supervision.
