To facilitate venous puncture with difficult-to-locate vessels it is normal to apply a pressure cuff to the upper arm, and to ask the patient to clench his fist. The vessels can be further dilated by the application of surface heat. Machines exist to provide all three of these stimuli simultaneously with a special hand-grip, a pressure cuff for the upper arm and a heating pad over the lower arm.
