Heat can be generated within the body by the absorption of ultrasound delivered through the skin from a piezoelectric transducer. The frequency employed is usually between 1 and 3 MHz and the intensity about 1 W/cm2 at the skin. Such devices are used for the treatment of injury, pain, inflammation, etc. in the physiotherapy department. See Ultrasonic diathermy for further details.
