This is a term sometimes used to describe an ultrasonic treatment unit (ultrasonic diathermy apparatus) used in the physiotherapy department for relieving pain and inflammation. The main effect appears to be heating due to absorption of the waves in the tissue, but there is also the possibility that some of the effect may be due to a sort of 'molecular massage'. An equipment described as an ultrasonic massager may have a variety of treatment regimes involving continuous wave output, pulsed, and pulsating waveforms. See also Ultrasonic diathermy.
