This device monitors the movement of fluid through a dialyser membrane caused by the pressure gradient created by a positive blood pressure on one side of the membrane and a negative dialysate pressure on the other. The monitor is sometimes a separate non-intrusive device, using electronic means of measurement. On some machines the device is active and includes the ability to control fluid movement by volumetric pumps.
