If the substance to be examined can be made into a suspension or a finely divided colloid then the turbidity will be proportional to the concentration. If the turbidity is not too great and the particles small enough then the turbidity will relate to the amount of light absorbed in passage through it. Usually light in the red end of the spectrum will be used but the exact wavelength is not important. Such devices are sometimes used in the chemical pathology department. The construction of the instrument is broadly similar to a densitometer.
