TUNNEL BATH

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 10

Phototherapy, usually employing infrared light, may be applied from a radiant heat source over part of the patient to be treated in the physiotherapy department, or an array of lamps may be used in a special frame forming a tunnel over the patient or part to be treated. The main effect is superficial heating causing increased blood supply, relief of pain, muscle relaxation and perhaps biochemical effects. Similar types exist employing ultraviolet fluorescent tubes providing UVA (280-400 nm), sometimes called the Theraktin tunnel.
