A special purpose X-Y recorder or display can be used where a very large amount of information has to be summarized. Commonly a trend recorder is used to compress many hours of a recording on to a single sheet such as in ambulatory ECG recording or foetal monitoring. The recording may be of the simple trend (up or down) of a rate, or it may be a statistical presentation (e.g. histogram) of variations in each parameter (e.g. diastolic blood pressure ). Such recorders are often small computers.
