This is a special ultrasonic scanner used for tracing the motion of structures within the body, particularly the walls and valves of the heart. It is commonly called an M-mode (motion) scanner or an echocardiograph. In effect it is a single line B-scanner presenting the echoes immediately beneath the ultrasonic transducer and moving this line slowly across a cathode ray tube screen so that static structures draw straight lines whereas moving structures have characteristic movement patterns. For further details see M-mode scanner.
