Substitution of audible signals for printed characters as an aid for the blind has its origins well before modern computers. This device is the trade name for a converter which produces characteristic sounds for each letter read by a special detector head. With training, reading could be accomplished at 40-60 words per minute. This particular apparatus is no longer available, but the general principle may be re-used in other apparatus.
