Individuals who are profoundly deaf from an early age often have great difficulty in developing normal speech because they do not hear their own voices well. In assisting them to develop speech an amplifying device is often used to feed back their own speech via headphones at a greatly amplified level. The device itself consists of a microphone, an amplifier with variable output and a pair of headphones. The same device is sometimes used as a communication aid for the deaf.
Such devices would usually be found in the speech therapy department or in schools for the deaf.
