Direct viewing, treatment, or biopsy sampling, may be achieved using an illuminated hollow tube passed into the rectum and sigmoid colon. Nowadays a flexible colonoscope would normally be used employing optic fibres to convey the light and to return the image to the eyepiece. In this case the device would have more general application for viewing the colon well beyond the ascending section.
