A sensitometer is a device for imprinting an image on a photographic or X-ray film in known steps of exposure. The object is to provide a standard set of exposures, usually in the form of a staircase pattern which can be read by a densitometer after the film is processed.
In practice the film is placed in the sensitometer and a standard amount of light is emitted through a mask which includes a step wedge. Such devices are used in photographic laboratories, but in medical use their application is for assurance of X-ray film quality and film processor performance.
