During anaesthesia gases are delivered to the patient through the breathing circuit such that exhaled gases may be completely discharged from the circuit, or they may be wholly or partially rebreathed. A semi-closed circuit is one in which they are partially re-inhaled, intentionally or otherwise. The most common breathing circuit (the Magill or Mapleson A) is such a circuit in which a carbon dioxide absorber may be included or not.
