This term is applied to small containers (tubes or needles) containing radioactive material which can be inserted into tumours, or applied to the surface, to provide localized radiotherapy. The containers are typically platinum or irridium alloys, or, in the case of tubes, silver. The radioactive elements are normally radium or caesium-137. Such devices are found in the radiotherapy or oncology department.
