SCREENING AUDIOMETER

Typical Number in Hospital: 5 Cost Bands: 2 References: 3

The simplest form of pure tone audiometer consists of a portable unit which delivers a few (e.g. four) different tone frequencies at a restricted range of intensities so that individuals with a clinically significant hearing loss can be identified quickly in a large population (e.g. school children). Such audiometers are usually used outside the hospital, in schools and clinics. Those individuals who fail a screening test of hearing would usually be referred for more precise testing methods in the audiology department at the hospital or other referral centre.
