This is another name for a gamma camera. It usually consists of a large sodium iodide crystal and a collimator arranged so that radioactivity within an organ causes scintillations within the crystal at points corresponding to the position of radionuclides within the organ. The positions are calculated by computer from the light flashes (scintillations) detected by an array of photomultiplier (PM) tubes positioned above the crystal. The device is used in the nuclear medicine or X-ray department for producing images of the distribution of radionuclides in the organs under investigation.
