SCAVENGING SYSTEM

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 2

It is desirable to remove gases exhaled by patients in operating theatres because of the effects of the anaesthetic agents on the staff. The mechanism of removal of these gases has become known as scavenging. Scavenging systems include long breathing tubes on the expiratory port to carry the gases to the extraction side of the air-conditioning system, or to a special low-grade suction system ducting the gases outside the building. Halothane can be removed by connection to a special activated charcoal absorber (see Aldasorber).
