This term is usually applied to an apparatus for emergency ventilation of the lungs, and may also be called a respirator. It normally refers to a self-inflating air bag, valves and a face mask, perhaps with provision for an oxygen supply. Examples are the Ambu, Air Viva, Cardiff inflating bellows, Oxford inflating bellows and the Samson infant resuscitator.
A defibrillator may also sometimes be called a resuscitator.
