RESPIROMETER

Typical Number in Hospital: 30 Cost Bands: 2 References: 2

It is useful to measure the volume or flow rate of gases entering or leaving the lungs during anaesthesia, particularly if assisted ventilation is being used. The best known device for this is the Wright's respirometer which can be fitted into the breathing circuit and works by directing the gases on to a rotating vane which drives a gear train attached to a pointer moving over a dial. It only measures gas movement in one direction because the forward flow is directed on to the vanes through oblique slots in a small drum surrounding the vane. Retrograde flow enters the device along the axis of the vane.
