These are common components in the delivery system for medical gases, particularly for cylinder oxygen supplies. A regulator will consist of a high-pressure valve operated by a diaphragm on the low-pressure side. Variations in the low-pressure output will be compensated for by suitable automatic adjustments in the flow rate of the high-pressure gas. Cooling fins may be provided to prevent icing due to the Joule-Thomson effect, as in the Adams regulator.
Many gas regulators are two-stage regulators which provide a more stable low-pressure output in widely varying flow conditions.
Regulators often have integral pressure gauges to show the performance of input and output pressures.
