RECTILINEAR SCANNER

Typical Number in Hospital: 3 Cost Bands: 5,6 References: 3

This is a large scintillation counter with collimator which is moved over the body in a rectilinear motion so as to map the distribution of radioactivity. It is used in the nuclear medicine or X-ray department to investigate the distribution of radionuclides following the administration of a radiopharmaceutical. The best known example of its use is in scanning for the distribution of iodine uptake by the thyroid gland. The results are plotted using a dotting recorder, or a computer image is formed.
