REBREATHING CIRCUIT

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 2

In anaesthesia, exhaled gases may be discarded, and new gases inspired from the anaesthetic machine, or the same gases may be re-inhaled, totally or in part. Full rebreathing as occurs in a closed (e.g. circle) circuit needs a carbon dioxide absorber. Partial rebreathing as in a semi-closed circuit (e.g. Magill) may not use an absorber. Rebreathing circuits are economical with the gases and vapours, cause little air pollution, and are more suitable for use with assisted ventilation.
