The flow velocity at various points across a blood vessel can be obtained from outside the body using a pulsed wave doppler ultrasonic flowmeter. These employ range-gating by which the flow velocity can be measured at a relatively well-defined point (e.g. within 2 mm) and at any distance from the transducer along the line of the transmitted ultrasound beam. Such devices may produce information about the flow pattern at a particular point within an artery or may be used to produce a velocity profile. They can also be combined with B-scanners to identify the sampling point on the B-scan image, or used to present a special B-scan image on which only the rapidly moving parts (blood within the arteries) are shown. See also Pulsed wave doppler ultrasonic velocity meter.
