RADIO PILL

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References:

This is a radio transmitter, small enough to be swallowed, which may operate from inside the body. It transmits electrical, pressure, or pH signals from within the gut. Similar devices can be introduced into the bladder to record pressure changes. They are usually epoxy encapsulated and contain a simple Hartley oscillator circuit operating at low frequency (e.g. 0.5 MHz) which is detected outside the body with a loop aerial. More complex devices are possible which may be implanted, but these are not often used clinically.
