This is an extension of the simple pulse monitor, and is a device used by anaesthetists to monitor pulse rate. The pulse is detected and averaged from a microphone over an artery, a pressure bulb taped on to the skin, or a photo-electric device detecting the fluctuations in the red light transmitted through or reflected from a finger or ear lobe due to the pulse.
