The amplitudes of pulses from a scintillation detector used in nuclear medicine vary according to the energy of the incident rays. A pulse height analyser is an electronic device employed to identify those pulses falling between two preset amplitude levels which may relate only to the product of a single isotope. This process is sometimes called window discrimination. A number of pulse height analysers may be operated in parallel and the results collected by a multichannel analyser to show count rates from a number of isotopes simultaneously.
Another type of pulse height analyser is used to plot the size distribution of blood cells in conjunction with a cell counter.
