PROGRESSIVE TREATMENT UNIT

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 10

This is another name for an electrotherapy apparatus used in the physiotherapy department for exercising denervated or wasted muscles by passing electric current through the tissues from surface or internal electrodes, or electrodes in a water bath. The currents may be interrupted direct current, low-frequency alternating current (e.g. 50 Hz) or faradic currents. The unit normally has controls to vary the intensity and the duration of the treatment pulses and can cause them to rise in a progressive manner throughout the treatment with periods of rest between the groups of pulses to enable the muscles to recover.
