PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 2

To release excess gases or pressure from a closed circuit, these are used in many kinds of apparatus and are commonly encountered in anaesthetic apparatus. Pressure can be limited to a safe level by setting a pressure relief valve to allow gas to escape freely if the set pressure is exceeded. They may also be used to regulate pressure (rather wastefully), by releasing excess gas so that the relief valve is open all the time.
