POTASSIUM ION ANALYSER

Typical Number in Hospital: 5 Cost Bands: 4 References:

Measurement of the concentration of potassium ions in whole blood or plasma may be made by using an ion selective electrode which is sensitive to potassium ions. The voltage between the potassium ion electrode and a reference electrode is proportional to the potassium ion concentration in the sample. This technique is used in both stat (discrete sample) analysers, and autoanalysers in chemical pathology laboratories and intensive care units. It may be a separate instrument or combined with (for example) a sodium ion meter.
