This is simply a multichannel pen recorder with a set of special preamplifiers (signal conditioning units) so that a number of physiological signals can be recorded simultaneously. The term usually applies to pen recorders but could equally be used to describe ultraviolet, ink-jet, or photographic recorders. Typical signals monitored using a polygraph might be arterial or other pressures, skin resistance, temperature, etc. The term 'polygraph' is sometimes used in popular works to mean 'lie detector', which is a skin resistance meter used for non-medical purposes.
