PNEUMOGRAPH

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 3,6

This is a general term for a breathing monitor, spirometer, or apnoea monitor. It is sometimes used to describe a simple chest wall movement detector utilizing a length of large-diameter tube tied around the chest and connected to a pressure transducer. The device can be used as an apnoea detector since the pressure in the tube will vary continually unless breathing ceases. This type of apnoea detector is unlikely to be found now. Electrical pneumographs also exist using mercury-in-rubber strain gauges wound around the chest or using electrical impedance measurements across the thorax.
