A special type of ultrasonic B-scanner is available in which a small ultrasonic transducer is mounted on the side of a tube which can be passed into a natural orifice. The tube is rotated manually or by a motor such that the image is in the form of a disc representing the tissue around the tube at the level of the transducer. The most common use of this type of scanner is for visualizing the prostate gland from a site within the urethra or rectum. The probe is normally interfaced to a B-scanner which is also used for other purposes.
