This is an external ventilator, which consists of a rubber bag strapped around the patient's chest, connected to a second bag which is squeezed manually to apply pressure to the chest, thus providing some artificial ventilation. Expansion of the chest is by elastic recoil. It is used in anaesthetic procedures such as bronchoscopy where access to the airways must be unobstructed.
