A therapeutic ultrasonic treatment unit, as used in the physiotherapy department, may be used for phonophoresis to assist the passage of a drug through the skin using the ultrasonic vibrations. For example, a preparation of hydrocortisone might be applied to the skin, and the ultrasonic probe used to assist penetration by the ultrasonic massaging effect, and the local heat generated.
