Phonocardiography with external microphones suffers from interference due to background noise and patient movement. Heart sounds are sometimes detected using a microphone mounted on a catheter, which is passed into the heart as part of the cardiac catheterization procedure. In fact, the miniature catheter-tip pressure transducers used within the chambers of the heart may have sufficient frequency response to collect the heart sounds as well.
