PHONIC EAR

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References:

Although this is the name of a company manufacturing hearing aid equipment, the term 'phonic ear' is commonly used to describe a type of radio-frequency hearing aid for children in schools. The teacher wears a microphone/amplifier which is also a radio transmitter, and the child wears a radio receiver/hearing aid. The main advantage is that of very good signal-to-noise ratio. The teacher's voice is heard above the usual clatter and reverberation of the classroom, and the radio system allows transmission over several hundred metres (ideal for the school playing field).

Such systems are sometimes known (wrongly) as inductive loop hearing aids.
