During the expiratory phase of intermittent positive pressure lung ventilation the small airways and the alveoli may close completely due to the low or negative pressure applied. This can be prevented by ensuring that there is a small positive pressure being applied at the end of expiration (PEEP). Some lung ventilators can provide PEEP by a restriction of the outflow of gases or by a special valve to allow expiration only above a specific pressure.
