Where the patient is included in an active, or measurement circuit, that part of circuit which shares current, energy, or gas flow with the patient is called the patient circuit. For electric circuits the topic is dealt with in BS 5724/IEC 601.1. Often the breathing circuit of anaesthetic apparatus is referred to as the patient circuit.
