A vertical cylinder about 20 cm in diameter marked with black and white vertical stripes is rotated by motor or by hand while the patient follows the stripes with his eyes. Brain stem lesions which impair the ability to follow moving objects can be detected. Eye movements may be monitored visually or by electronystagmograph apparatus. These may be found in orthoptic and audiology departments.
