OPHTHALMOSCOPE

Typical Number in Hospital: 50 Cost Bands: 1 References:

This instrument is a hand-held device containing a battery in the handle, a bulb for illuminating the inside of the eye, and a set of lenses set in a disc which can be rotated to select different strengths. The device is held in front of the patient's eye and the operator looks through one of the small lenses into the eye to view the appearance of the cornea, the lens, the aqueous and vitreous humour, and the surface of the retina. The blood vessels in the retina can be clearly seen and there are particular appearances for diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and other conditions. Some hereditary disorders of the retina also produce characteristic appearances.
