This is designed to accurately measure the curvature of the anterior surface of the cornea, which is the chief refracting surface of the human eye. It can thus deliver a primary index of the patient's astigmatism. Measurements are made either in millimetres radius of curvature or in dioptres. It is an optical device which reflects an image off the surface of the cornea to an observing screen.
