Although this has an electrical meaning, it also refers to a type of breathing circuit used in anaesthesia in which the mask does not fit the face and there is free access of air to the breathing circuit. It may also refer to anaesthetic or ventilator circuits in which the gases exhaled are passed directly out of the breathing circuit with no intentional rebreathing.
