Defibrillation is ineffective in treating some heart attack victims. External pacing can help, but in emergency situations valuable time is lost in inserting a cardiac catheter. Using an oesophageal pacemaker the pacing catheter is inserted transorally or transnasally in 30 seconds or so.
Approximately 30 V output is required for the pacer to achieve cardiac pacing.
