This is a trade name for an unusual type of ultrasonic B-scanner which is fully automatic. The patient lies on a special table which has a large membrane at its centre smeared with ultrasonic coupling jelly on to which the patient presses the area to be scanned. For an abdominal scan the patient is face down with the abdominal skin in contact with the membrane. In the case of infants they are laid on this membrane. Beneath the membrane is a large water tank partially supporting the membrane and in the bottom of this is an array of ultrasonic transducers which are large, long focal length, dish transducers. A compound scan is performed by the rocking of these transducers while the image is being formed.
Very high-quality images can be produced by this method.
