Most sound level meters include an amplifying circuit designed to approximate to the frequency response of the human ear and so make the readings more relevant in terms of perceived loudness. If a more objective analysis of sound is required it is useful to make readings of sound pressure in restricted frequency bands or ranges and so obtain an idea of the spectrum of the sounds present.
An octave band analyser is a series of electronic filters having a pass-band of one octave each. The device is usually an add-on accessory for a sound level meter.
