This term is synonymous with 'indifferent electrode' as used in monopolar surgical diathermy. It is a metal or metallized plastic flexible plate of relatively large area (e.g. 10 cm x 10 cm) for connection to the body of the patient to provide a return path for the high-frequency current used in surgical diathermy, but with such a low current density at the skin that the physical effects which might cause burns are avoided.
